DiJonai Carrington scores 10 of her 22 in overtime and the Sun beat the Mystics 94-91

Mystics coach Eric Thibault mystified by crucial offensive foul call

Carrington made a wide-open 3-pointer with 2:43 left in overtime and stole the ball at the other end, leading to a fast-break layup for an 89-85 lead. Carrington added another 3-pointer with 56.4 seconds remaining for a 92-88 lead before Myisha Hines-Allen answered with a three-point play at the other end.

Washington called a timeout with 15.5 seconds left, trailing 92-91. Ariel Atkins dribbled into the lane and passed it out to the corner for Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, who was short on a 3-point attempt.

Carrington made two free throws with 3.9 left for a three-point lead and Julie Vanloo’s halfcourt heave was not close at the buzzer.

Tyasha Harris added 23 points and four steals for Connecticut (14-3).

Hines-Allen finished with 21 points and Stefanie Dolson added 18 for Washington (4-14), which was undone by 23 turnovers.

Shakira Austin (11.7 points per game), Brittney Sykes (11.3), Karlie Samuelson (hand) and rookie Aaliyah Edwards (lower back) did not play, leaving the Mystics with only eight available players.

Harris made a 3-pointer with 48.0 seconds left in regulation to get Connecticut to 82-80. After a Washington turnover, Carrington drove the baseline and made a layup while being fouled with 24.3 seconds left. But Carrington missed the free throw to keep it tied at 82-all.

Washington held the ball at the top of the key to wind down the clock before beginning its offense with about 5 seconds left. Vanloo drove into the lane, making contact with Veronica Burton and the officials called an offensive foul. Connecticut had a good look at a game-winning shot, but Bonner’s long 3-pointer bounced off the rim.
