Match Timeline

  • 0': The Champions League is now the only show in town for Chelsea. Join me, John Brewin, to see how they get on at FC Copenhagen.
  • 0': Big news is of course the presence of Fernando Torres and the non-selection for the starting XI of Didier Drogba. One of these players will not be at Chelsea this time next year, you mark my words.
  • 0': John Terry, has talked of it being time to 'Man Up'. Those memories of his tears in the rain at Moscow flood in for some reason. David Luiz's all-action perm will not be in action tonight - he is cup-tied.
  • 0': Carlo Ancelotti, then, a man with a bullet aimed at him or what? If this goes awry, he could be having pancetta rather than bacon for his breakfast sooner rather than later.
  • 0': Reports suggest Drogba did not take part in the warm-up. He's taken that well, then.
  • 0': Great atmosphere in Copenhagen, and the Danish fans are belting out their songs, one of which is a rewrite of a Boomtown Rats classic.
  • 0': Out rings the anthem, and here comes the kick-off. Copenhagen is buzzing for this one, and Jesper Gronkjaer will be too. One of his goals helped Chelsea to the Champions League in 2003. That summer, they were purchased as a going concern by a certain Russian.
  • 1': Off we go, and Chelsea get going. Every FC touch is cheered by the home fans. Boos aplenty for Chelsea and Torres plays in Malouda who hoofs into the stands.
  • 1': Ball out wide for a long throw from Copenhagen. Rory Delap it wasn't and Chelsea clear after some overcomplication.
  • 3': Lampard fouled in the act of tracking back.
  • 4': Essien fouled. Time for a free-kick to be launched into the Copenhagen box.
  • 5': Anelka's surge is blocked and the ball is cleared. Lampard tries to chip a returned ball through to Anelka but he is offside.
  • 6': Yellow card for Zanka after a bundle over of Torres.
  • 6': Torres had a chance. But his touch was very heavy indeed.
  • 6': Ball came to him almost by surprise. At the other end, the same happens for Bolanos. Torres still looks way off. Penny for Drogba's thoughts.
  • 7': Terry hoofs clear. But then Santin gets a chance for a snapshot. It misses by quite a way.
  • 8': This is no easy meat for Chelsea, but then again, not much is for them at the moment.
  • 9': Cech hoofs wildly under little pressure but Chelsea come away with it. They choose to build slowly.
  • 10': The move results in Ashley Cole being offside from Lampard's prod through.
  • 11': Torres and Anelka link well. Good pass from Torres, better touch from Anelka. Good block results in a corner.
  • 12': Another corner conceded by Santin.
  • 13': That's cleared too. Before Bosingwa gets found offside. Copenhagen playing offside well so far though it is tough discipline to maintain for 90 minutes.
  • 13': Copenhagen pressure. Pospech's shot blocked and Chelsea looked somewhat panicked there.
  • 14': Torres back to life? Nice ball out to Malouda showed some poise. The cross is too close to keeper Wiland.
  • 15': Torres run is checked. He's looked lively, that heavy touch aside. Problem being that it is on such moments that he will be judged.
  • 16': GOAL A mistake from Gronkjaer allows Anelka to slip through and show Torres (and Drogba) how it's done. Angled drive and that's 1-0 to the visitors.
  • 17': Claudemir's wild shot denies the Danes an instant reply.
  • 18': Foothold for Chelsea here. Anelka's class told though keeper Wiland didn't do too well.
  • 18': N'Doye ran through and ran into Terry. He fell to the ground and the crowd cried 'foul'. They did not get it and the ref waves play on.
  • 19': Chelsea suddenly look relaxed here. Anelka in the mood. His ball to Torres is blocked.
  • 20': Pospech gets forward and Ivanovic clears. Torres's trickery Zanka and he gets in a shot that is well saved. It was a toepoke but was an impressive pattern of play from Torres.
  • 21': Chelsea eye more goals here.
  • 23': Malouda flick to Anelka and he heads over. Again, good play. Copenhagen look rusty.
  • 24': Lampard's thread found Torres but he was denied by some strong defending. Not running for him yet.
  • 24': Defending from Torres there. He is up for it!
  • 25': That atmosphere is coolling now. Chelsea have killed the crowd. That's part of the battle on such occasions.
  • 26': Anelka and Torres looks a partnership. Bad news for Drogba-fans.
  • 27': Ramires down injured, looked a bit nasty. The magic sponge is being squeezed.
  • 28': Ramires has recovered. Chelsea in residence in the Copenhagen box.
  • 29': A goal before half-time and we are done here.
  • 30': Gronkjaer stumbles again. He's no Dennis Rommedahl.
  • 31': Anelka is in form. Malouda was blocked and Anelka burst through but could not get his shot with any power.
  • 32': Copenhagen actually get the ball and try to play some possession stuff. It lasts 30 seconds. And it's time for Chelsea to dominate.
  • 33': Ramires escapes a booking for kicking the ball out in petulance.
  • 34': Torres booked now. He's in the thick of it. A foul on Bolanos.
  • 34': Mild panic for Chelsea as the resultant free-kick drifts in. Gronkjaer's header is poor. Bosingwa sees it out.
  • 35': Essien tackling back; he has done well in the engine room. Terry nearly gets Chelsea into trouble but Essien bails him out.
  • 37': Copenhagen mount an attack but their passing is shaky, and lame. They are looking overawed here, and no mistake.
  • 38': Anelka's sharpness wins him space but he blazes over.
  • 39': Another move falls down from some poor choice of passing for Copenhagen. Chelsea now on the attack through Anelka - the player of the half - but his shot is wayward this time.
  • 40': Torres gets space, nice ball out to Malouda. But Lampard fails to get the return. Bolanos' ball drifts to Cech. A waste.
  • 41': Chelsea could do with not relaxing on this.
  • 42': Kvist fouls Lampard to some tune but is not booked. The ref has been lenient tonight. Not that there has been much in the way of blood and thunder.
  • 43': N'doye fouled by Malouda, whose hair is rather short tonight. Le barber has been visted.
  • 43': Chelsea close out the half in possession. A minute to go of extra time.
  • 44': Free-kick for handball. Torres tries to win another but his swallow dive is a waste.
  • 45': Half-time, and that is that. Chelsea strolling here against a team who look as though they have not played for three months, whichj they haven't.
  • 45': This could be a great night for the boys in Blue, as Blackpool lead Tottenham 2-0. And that was some goal too from DJ Campbell.
  • 46': Back underway in Copenhagen. And an early blast from sub Vingaard. He's come on for Santini, who suffered from anonymity.
  • 47': N'Doye claims for a penalty. Chelsea players not happy with that. John Terry refereeing the game as normal.
  • 48': Terry intercepts well and then plays back to Cech. The Czech keeper has done very little - and has had to do even less.
  • 49': Torres fakes on to his left and tries a shot. That's blocked. Frustrated but up for it.
  • 50': N'Doye makes another dive attempt. Failed.
  • 51': Vingaard in space but the shot is straight at Cech.
  • 52': Gronkjae fouls Bosingwa. He may be remembered for 2003 and 2004 but those days are gone for Jesper. He's had a shocker.
  • 53': GOAL Anelka is bang in form! Lampard's ball through and the Frenchman is in space and with time to hit it. He does and it's in the left-hand corner. Early hit and that is surely that for this tie.
  • 53': Without getting ahead of themselves, the Chels can begin to think of the next round, and Ancelotti can probably make that weekly shop to Waitrose without it all going to waste.
  • 55': Torres burst. That comes to naught. Not his night yet but a goal here is highly possible and desirable to lift that flagging spirit.
  • 55': Torres lay off for Lampard but blazed a mile over.
  • 57': Torres on the run, he engineers space and squirts a shot through. It's well saved. The door is being knocked on here.
  • 57': Torres is likely to be the target for his team. They must sense and will his first goal for them.
  • 59': N'Doye whacks wide. Very wide. Copenhagen have been desperate.
  • 59': Copenhagen's fans are being outsung by the Blue Army.
  • 61': Chelsea back in numbers to deny Qvist.
  • 62': Bosingwa in acres of space. Cole out wide. Ramires threads for Anelka but he is offside.
  • 63': At Lyon, Benzema has just scored against his old club to put Real Madrid 1-0 up.
  • 64': Heavy touch with Qvist. Copenhagen are having one, as they say.
  • 65': More Chelsea pressure. They are finding plenty of space.
  • 66': Cole's cross turns into an Fc attack. Bolanos shot is rather wide.
  • 67': Gronkjaer's night gets worse. He looked to be fouled. And an offside was given, just as he dived past John Terry. Embarrassing.
  • 68': Boswingwa wastes the ball when he had time and space. Chelsea perhaps slackening.
  • 69': Pospech booked for a foul on Torres. And he'll miss the next one:
  • 70': Free-kick chance. Lampard smashes it over. Drogba would have done better. Or so he'd tell you.
  • 71': Essien on the rampage loses it but his presence makes Wendt panic. Copenhagen escape with a throw against them.
  • 72': On comes Drog. Off comes Anelka. Cue the odd couple. Anelka has been excellent and reminded that Chelsea have another rather good striker.
  • 73': TORRES! Through on goal, somewhat edgily but his shot is slow and able to be cleared. How long will this wait go on?
  • 73': Pierre Bergsson on for Oscar Wendt.
  • 73': N'Doye was greedy again. Long run, long shot, and a waste.
  • 75': Cech plucks a cross from the night's sky with ease.
  • 76': Copenhagen attack. Vingaard has a shot from too far to trouble Torres.
  • 77': Bergsson's cross comes into Cech. Quick release but Drogba is stopped in his tracks.
  • 79': Nice move by Copenhagen that sees Claudemir with a chance to shoot. Again, he was too far to trouble Cech. Terry and co have defended deep and with quality.
  • 80': Chelsea still have the run of this. N'Doye fails to read a Gronkjaer ball.
  • 81': Bafetimbi Gomis equalises for Lyon!
  • 83': Fans are bouncing in the stand. That is not through enthusiasm for the occasion. Rather for the -4 temperatures.
  • 83':
Nicolas Anelka celebrates after scoring twice against Copenhagen
  • 83': Off comes Malouda, he of the Carlton Banks hair. He is booked for taking too long. On comes Zhirkov. Very odd.
  • 84': That's a weak booking and may prove costly in a later round.
  • 84': Terry booked for clattering into Vingaard. Again, silly.
  • 86': Sliderule from Torres does not come off, as so often tonight. He will get it back, but it's not here just yet.
  • 86': Torres plays in Essien. Shot fired over.
  • 87': Drogba fails to get to a nice pass from Torres.
  • 88': Torres gets the ball for a long period. Drogba fancies a shot and is rather selfish. And wasteful too.
  • 90': Into time added on here. Copenhagen need a goal. It is doubtful they will get it.
  • 90': A header from N'Doye is saved by Cech. It was never going in.
  • 90': Torres to be subbed to waste time. No goal for him. Kalou on. Torres was better but not good enough.
  • 90': Gronkjaer thwarted by Bosingwa. They shall not pass.
  • 90': Bergson drives wide - another weak effort for Copenhagen.
  • 90': That is that here. Chelsea seem to have the job all but done. Torres needed a goal. John Terry has a go at the ref but he would.
  • 90': Chelsea have their eye on one prize. Though Tottenham's fortunes at Blackpool will further lift them.
  • 90': Join us for more Champions League action tomorrow.
