Match Timeline

  • 0': We're 15 minutes away from tonight's feature match between PSV and Liverpool. The teams are in and the Phillips Stadion is beginning to fill up. We'll bring you all the action live from 1945 BST.
  • 0': Predictably, Peter Crouch keeps his place in attack after his hat-trick heroics against Arsenal on Saturday, with Dirk Kuyt preferred alongside him. Javier Mascherano retains his place in the heart of the midfield with Steven Gerrard likely to start on the right.
  • 0': PSV have injury problems with Aruna Kone out injured as well as their influential defender Alex who is a long-term absentee. The players emerge from the tunnel as kick-off approaches.
  • 0': The stands are awash with red and white flags being waved by the enthusiastic PSV fans. Both teams have the capability of shutting up shop and protecting their keepers, but let's hope for an attacking, free-flowing match.
  • 0': The players have taken up their positions and the French referee Bertrand Layec gets the game under way.
  • 1': A couple of early hoofs upfield from Carragher test the new centre-back partnership, but to no avail as Timmy Simmons heads clear.
  • 2': First shot of the evening falls to the Finn, Mika Vayrynen who, from 20 yards, hits a curling effort just wide. Clean strike but just off target.
  • 4': Liverpool seek to gain some possession and build-up an attack. It looks composed and patient but without the cutting edge as yet.
  • 6': Farfan gives Carragher food for thought with a jinking run cutting in from the left and the Liverpool defender is forced to play safe and clear his lines. PSV though, look wary of Liverpool and have set up almost like the away team so far.
  • 8': The Dutch side are quick to get numbers behind the ball and soak up spells of pressure. That should suit Liverpool who are enjoying a decent spell on the ball. Somewhat of a chess match so far.
  • 10': The two tactical coaches Benitez and Koeman are starting to work each other out. Koeman is obviously favouring a counter-attack policy while Benitez will want his men to break down this stubborn resistance.
  • 11': I hope PSV show more ambition than they are at present. Liverpool are asking all the questions so far.
  • 13': Maybe Farfan hasn't read his coach's script of defend at all costs. He looks full of running and could be PSV's only outlet up front.
  • 15': Both teams still feeling their way before Carragher powers a header goalwards from a Gerrard corner. Gomes shows good agility to get across and get a firm palm to the ball and claw it away. A superb save to deny Carragher the first goal.
  • 16': PSV will have to be careful playing so defensively. If they fall behind they may struggle to find a way back.
  • 17': All Liverpool at the moment and the home fans are starting to lose patience with their players. Liverpool supporters, however, have found their voice and are happy with what they've seen thus far.
  • 18': Mascherano has made an encouraging start to the match. A couple of neat touches and a few firm challenges have broken up PSV passages of play.
  • 20': An extremely ambitious effort from Salcido with his right boot down the left flank sums up what PSV are all about tonight. Afraid to throw too many forward and instead take their chances from distance.
  • 21': It's a similar feel to when Arsenal played here in the previous round where Arsenal were in control but failed to punish their hosts.
  • 22': PSV at last get numbers in the box and create a decent chance. Kromkamp picks out Vayrynen with a cross from the right wing and the Finn volleys downwards before taking a deflection off Carragher for a corner.
  • 23': From the corner Cocu does well to manufacture a header that he squirts wide of Reina's right post.
  • 25': Those two efforts have woken up the home support who were beginning to wonder what they'd paid the money for.
  • 26': The players have responded too with Varynen and Mendes keen to get on the ball.
  • 27': GOAL: PSV 0-1 LIVERPOOL
  • 27': STEVEN GERRARD heads Liverpool in front with a well-worked move. Steve Finnan sends in a perfect cross from the right-wing and the skipper arrives to plant his header into the corner. Training ground goal with a casual finish from their leader.
  • 29': Incidentally, that goal moves Gerrard ahead of legend Ian Rush on goals scored in Europe.
  • 31': Liverpool fans are understandably cock-a-hoop. PSV are there for the taking tonight and Liverpool will fancy their chances of wrapping up this tie this evening.
  • 32': PSV have lost their way and Liverpool have hardly been threatened. The yellow-shirted Reds look confident and eager to keep hold of the ball.
  • 34': It's a blustery evening in Eindhoven and the wind is certainly driving the Liverpool sails. Carragher and co are defending their line with ease.
  • 36': Update from the other quarter-final match being played in Milan. It's AC Milan 0-0 Bayern Munich but by the sounds of it, Milan are all over their opponents.
  • 37': Tardelli breaks through the Liverpool midfield and is promptly upended by Mascherano from behind. The Argentine looked to have got his foot on the ball but the referee reaches for his pocket and brandishes a yellow.
  • 38': UPDATE: AC MILAN 1-0 BAYERN MUNICH
  • 39': Over in Milan, Andrea Pirlo has put the hosts one-up.
  • 40': In Eindhoven, PSV are still on the backfoot and struggling to find a way through the English side. Mendez tries his luck from 30 yards but slashes wide.
  • 41': The PSV body language isn't too positive at the moment. Some shoulders are being shrugged and heads dropping. Koeman will need to rally his beleagured troops at the break.
  • 43': As the half draws to a close Liverpool sit back and look to protect their lead.
  • 45': HALF-TIME: PSV EINDHOVEN 0-1 LIVERPOOL
  • 45': It's all going to plan for Liverpool with Steven Gerrard capping a comfortable first period with a well-worked headed goal. They will fancy their chances of putting the Dutch to the sword in the second half.
  • 45': The players are are back out and we're back under way.
  • 45': A surprise in the team line-up for PSV as Farfan fails to appear. Sun Xiang comes on to replace him.
  • 46': Liverpool immediately attack with Xabi Alonso wasting a good chance within 30 seconds by volleying down into the ground after fine work from Finnan down the right.
  • 48': GOAL: PSV EINDHOVEN 0-2 LIVERPOOL
  • 48': That could just be the tie settled. JOHN ARNE RIISE fires in a wonder strike with his sweet left foot. Comical defending from Simmons tees up the left-back who, with the outside of the boot powers past the helpless Gomes from 25 yards. Sublime strike.
  • 49': Patrick Kluivert comes on for PSV in a desperate attempt to rescue something for the Dutch, but they've got a mountain to climb now.
  • 50': The Liverpool fans are in full voice and rightly so. PSV simply haven't done enough to worry Liverpool and the Reds have kept the hold on their opponents.
  • 52': If anything, Liverpool look like scoring again. They can afford to relax a little now and they are passing the ball around with a swagger.
  • 53': Koeman shows no emotion on the PSV bench, but inside he must be wondering how on earth they are going to make the next stage.
  • 54': Benitez meanwhile, is barking instructions to his players as the Reds look to turn the screw.
  • 55': Nothing is going PSV's way. They look weary, passes are going astray and even the offside decisions are going against them.
  • 57': Another chance for Riise but this time he squanders his chance. Kuyt whipped in a cross from the right and Gomes' fumble presented a chance for Riise to back-heel into the net. But the keeper does well to make the block at the second attempt.
  • 58': Xabi Alonso senses an opportunity to strike from long-range with Gomes off his line. He clips a dainty shot over the keeper from a long way out, only for the ball to fall just over the bar.
  • 60': The home crowd are flat to say the least. Their side are on the ropes and Liverpool have them exactly where they want them.
  • 61': GOAL: PSV EINDHOVEN 0-3 LIVERPOOL
  • 61': It goes from bad to worse for PSV, but better and better for Liverpool. This tie is surely over now as PETER CROUCH rises to nod home Finnan's pin-point cross.
  • 63': All the Liverpool anthemns ring out around the ground as they know their side have punished their weak opponents. Bolo Zenden comes on for the goalscorer Riise as Liverpool look to kill of the game.
  • 65': PSV resemble a boxer who has been forced into the corner and subjected to a barrage of heavy blows. They need Koeman to throw in the towell as they've got nothing in their armoury to get out of this battle.
  • 67': The home crowd, who perhaps know they are beaten, try to get their players going, but it's to no avail. Cocu is looking to get his side going, but if Salcido shoots as he did there, they're not likely to breach Reina's goal. High, wide and ugly from the winger.
  • 69': Kluivert has at least given PSV some presence up front, but he certainly hasn't ruffled Carragher who is having another typically solid performance.
  • 70': Yellow card for Culina for a lazy challenge on Zenden. They're going through the motions out there and getting punished for it.
  • 72': A nasty injury to Fabio Aurellio could put a downer on Benitez's evening. He pulled up sharply clutching his calf and looks in a whole world of pain. Off he comes on a stretcher with Mark Gonzalez on in his place.
  • 73': Still 1-0 to AC Milan in the other tie with Bayern Munich hanging on in the San Siro.
  • 74': Gerrard chases down a through-ball forcing Gomes to come off his line and hoof clear. It wouldn't surprise me if the PSV fans start making their way home soon. They surely won't want to endure much more of this?
  • 75': Gonzalez smashes a controlled left-footed tracer bullet that whistles past the upright from 30 yards out. Gomes was never threatened but it was a sweet hit from the winger.
  • 77': UPDATE: AC MILAN 1-1 BAYERN MUNICH
  • 78': Daniel van Buyten gives Bayern Munich a vital away goal in the San Siro completely against the run of play. No chance of PSV doing the same in our game though.
  • 80': An eerie silence falls on the stadium as Liverpool boss the posession and toy with their hosts. The PSV defence look like handing a chance to the Liverpool forwards every time they get on the ball.
  • 82': UPDATE: AC MILAN 2-1 BAYERN MUNICH
  • 83': Kaka scores from the spot to the relief of the home side. It was harshly awarded but the Brazilian won't complain, he's given his side a vital lead.
  • 84': Peter Crouch is afforded a standing ovation as he is brought off for Jermaine Pennant.
  • 85': Another thunderbolt from Gonzalez and this time he's even closer. It still goes over but not by much. Gomes was left rooted to the spot.
  • 87': Plenty of empty seats around the Phillips Stadion and I'm not surprised. In the away end the Liverpool fans are on their feet singing their favourite song.
  • 90': No chances or invention as the game winds down. PSV are chasing shadows, Liverpool are playing with all the ease in the world.
  • 91': Dirk Kuyt picks up the most needless of yellow cards for not retreating from a free-kick. It means he'll miss the second leg at Anfield - not that they'll need him.
  • 93': FULL-TIME: PSV EINDHOVEN 0-3 LIVERPOOL
  • 93': From the first whistle to the last Liverpool bossed their opponents who were poor throughout. The comprehensive 3-0 victory gives them an unassailable lead heading into the second leg.
