- 2': Essien shrugs off Keane, chests the ball down and his snap shot is deflected wide of Carroll's left-hand post.
- 3': Good start by the visitors. Smith replies with a copycat move but his volley dips over the bar.
- 4': Lyon have made a good start. Essien beats Keane once more but the midfielder recovers to block his shot.
- 5': Rooney latches onto a loose ball but his first touch is heavy and Diatta clears.
- 6': Ronaldo, Smith, Van Nistelrooy feints on the edge of the box. Scholes rides Diatta's desperate challenge and fires his shot high and wide. A good chance and he could have gone down for a penalty.
- 8': Ferdinand rashly dives into the tackle, Nimar skips past him. The youngster whips in a cross but Carroll races of his line to collect.
- 8': Ronaldo draws a foul from Juninho - on the corner of the box......
- 9': ..Keane rolls it short to Ronaldo, who fires in a wicked shot. Diatta throws himself in front of the shot and winds himself.
- 10': United are getting into the game after a slow start.
- 11': Heinze floats in a cross. Smith fails to bring the ball down cleanly but it drops to Ronaldo. Cris makes a last ditch tackle and concedes a corner.
- 12': Ferdinand heads across the box. Puydebois gathers in the Lyon goal.
- 12': Rooney works himself some space, puts Reveillere on his bum and smacks a 30-yard shot against the post. So close to the opener!
- 13': Lyon are on the back foot after an impressive first few minutes. Smith tracks Juninho and makes a good tackle.
- 14': Keane picks out Ronaldo, who uses Neville on the overlap. The rightback whips in a cross and Cris heads clear.
- 14': Essien's mis-hit long-range shot rolls wide of Carroll's post.
- 15': Smith hits the deck from Diarra'a challenge - a soft foul is awarded. Keane takes it quickly to Scholes, who skews his shot wide.
- 16': Frau looks for Govou on the left. Rooney, filling in at leftback, manages to deal with the danger.
- 17': Neville stuns the ball for Ferdinand, who has to rush his clearence and gives a quizzical look at Neville.
- 18': Ronaldo one-two with Neville. Smith breaks down the right and whips in a low cross. Van Nistelrooy must score....but Lyon clear off the line.
- 19': Neville follows up and lashes the ball into the back of the net from about 5-yards out. An excellent move with a scrappy finish. 1-0 United.
- 20': Lyon play keep ball.
- 21': Berthod sends Govou racing down the flank. The forward crosses from the left but Carroll watches the ball drift out of play.
- 22': Frau and Silvestre both fallover on the edge of the box. The defender recovers quickest and shepherds the ball back to Carroll.
- 23': Lyon have responded well to going a goal behind. United are having to soak up some pressure.
- 24': Rooney drives at the defence and looks to slip the a pass through to Van Nistelrooy. Diatta cuts it out on the edge of the box.
- 25': The Old Trafford crowd have finally found their voices. Ronaldo skips past two and hits a long-range shot over the bar.
- 26': A slick United move involving Smith and Van Nistelrooy is halted by the offside flag.
- 27': Smith leaps to flick the ball on to Rooney, whose snap shot whistles inches wide of the post.
- 28': Heinze breaks up a Lyon attack. Frau probes down the left but there is no way through there either. Good defending.
- 29': United's turn to probe. Rooney's loose pass is cut out. Scholes looks to win it back and concedes a freekick.
- 30': Juniho hits it long for Govou but the ball is too straight and bounces through to Carroll. Neither team can create a chance at the moment.
- 31': Scholes scoops a pass to Heinze, who has crept into the box. The Argentine's cross is poor and Berthod can bring the ball clear.
- 32': Ronaldo forces Diarra into a mistake. He has Van Nistelrooy waiting in the middle for a quick cross but the winger delays and the chance goes begging.
- 33': Rooney ghosts in from the left, drives into the box and fires off a shot that draws 'oooos' from the crowd.
- 34': Juninho sets Frau free with a delightful ball in behind Neville. Ferdinand comes over to cover and Frau hits his shot straight at Carroll. He should have done better.

- 36': United are keeping Lyon in their own half. Juninho breaks, shapes to shoot instead attempts to roll a cheeky ball into Frau's path. Silvestre clears.
- 37': Rooney battles his way past three defenders but the fourth, Cris, makes the tackle.
- 38': Diarra smacks a 25-yard shot straight at Carroll....but the keeper fumbles and the ball trickles over the line for the equaliser. 1-1
- 39': An absolute howler from Carroll. He simply let the strike go right through him.
- 40': Ronaldo breaks down the left. He hangs up a cross for Van Nistelrooy but Puydebois claws the ball away with his fingertips.
- 41': Smith's deep cross is cut out by Diatta, who has been immense at centre-back.
- 42': Van Nistelrooy is isolated, but the Dutchman wins a corner. United play it short and the chance is wasted.
- 43': Rooney picks it up in space, drives into the box and is finally crowded out by three defenders.
- 44': Rooney keeps getting time and space in between the defence and midfield but hasn't made them pay....as yet.

- 48': United have started the half well. Heinze crosses and Smith concedes a foul in his desperation to reach the pass.

- 58': Lyon probe. Diarra lofts the ball over the United defence for Govou, who volleys over the bar.
- 59': And that is Govou's last action of the match, he is replaced by Wiltord.
- 60': Former Arsenal striker Wiltord takes to the pitch accompanied by a series of boos and hisses from the home crowd.
- 61': Ronaldo sidesteps down the flank like a crab, unfortunately a crustacean could have delivered the same quality cross.
- 62': United have slowed the game down.
- 63': Heinze hoists the ball high into the box. Cris' header drops as far as Scholes, whose shot hits a defender and bounces clear.
- 64': Smith gets taken down. Keane retaliates and gets booked.
- 65': Ronaldo races down the flank, hurdles Berthod's desperate lunge and crosses. Van Nistelrooy is beaten to the near post by the Lyon keeper.
- 66': United have dominated for ten minutes but Lyon will not submit and have stopped the red tide.
- 67': Ronaldo breaks for United. The winger cuts in from the flank and draws a good block from Puydebois with a rasping drive.
- 69': Essien brings it clear and looks for Frau. Heinze dumps the striker to the ground with a robust challenge in the box. The ref waves away the penalty protests.
- 70': A loose pass from Scholes means Keane, who has already been booked, has to foul the Lyon forward. He escapes another card.

- 79': Fletcher wins the ball in the midfield, he has an age to pick out a runner yet fails to do so.
- 80': Bergougnoux skips past Heinze and hits a low shot that is deflected behind for a corner. United clear from the set piece.
- 81': Smith wins a 50-50 ball and then gets clattered by two players. He is up on his feet and United have a freekick.
- 82': Heinze takes the freekick, but the closest he can get to the goal is the back stanchion.

- 90': Essien takes another long-range pop and earns a late corner. Rooney defends well and smashes the ball up the pitch.
