  • 0': Eric Djemba-Djemba wins the battle with Kleberson to partner Roy Keane in central midfield, while John O'Shea's recovery from a thigh injury allows the Irishman to start at right-back in place of Phil Neville. • 1': United get this clash at the Municipal De Gerland under way
  • 2': Essien and Van Nistelrooy collide. It looks a little nasty at first as both hit the deck, but both are okay without treatment
  • 2': Abidal leans on Ronaldo, free-kick to United which is taken short
  • 3': Lyon are out of the blocks the quickest, looking for an early breakthrough
  • 4': Malouda wins a corner off O'Shea - danger for United. Juninho takes, but United are able to deal with the cross
  • 5': Scholes almost slips Van Nistelrooy through the centre, Cacapa intercepts well but the flag is up anyway
  • 6': Heinze's is late on Govou and is left on the floor in agony. The Argentine won the ball, but followed through onto the forward's shin. Heinze eventually gets a card from referee Stark, and Govou is left with stud marks
  • 7': Govou needs some treatment for the physio but he'll be okay to carry on - even though Heinze managed to draw blood
  • 8': Although Lyon are on top they are yet to cause any problems in the final third
  • 9': Frau looks to use his pace to get past Silvestre but goes down just outside the area under the French international's challenge. The ref waves play on - Silvestre can count himself lucky there
  • 10': Juninho wastefully gives the ball away to Keane in the centre, United can break. Ronalso gets it on the right and although Scholes misses the ball it comes to Djemba-Djemba...
  • 11': Djemba-Djemba goes inches over the bar - so close to giving United the lead slightly against the run of play
  • 12': Keane tries to play in Ronaldo down the line, only for Abidal to attempt to shield he ball out of play - then do two superb turns to leave Ronaldo on the deck and clear
  • 13': Ronaldo gets to the by-line and looks for Scholes at the back stick, forcing Reveillere to head behind for the corner
  • 14': The corner is a poor one, but the ball drops to Djemba-Djemba who again shoots over the top of the crossbar
  • 15': O'Shea's carelessness forces Keane into a rushed cross from deep - in turns out to be a lethal, curling ball into the box which finds Giggs at the back stick, but his first time effort goes wide of the opposite post
  • 16': United coming more into the game now, looking to take control both in possession and goals
  • 17': Djemba-Djemba is caught out by Frua, he finds Govou but mis-hits two attempted crosses - but does win a corner
  • 18': In comes in from the right, Cacapa is unmarked ten yards out and somehow manages to nod it wide of the left-hand post. He should have opened the scoring - awful defending
  • 19': United give the ball away, Silvestre making a mess of it and Malouda is fed through on goal by Wiltord. Howard comes out to smother the shot brilliantly and the visitors somehow clear.
  • 20': Henize again fells Govou, he'll have to be careful
  • 21': Cacapa does well to get back and thwart Ronaldo just as the Portuguese thought he was in on goal
  • 22': Another cross comes in, this time Malouda misses the header and Howards gathers via the striker's back
  • 23': Silvestre hacks clear following a Frau cross from the right
  • 24': Lyon are getting back on top now, but look short on quality in the final third
  • 25': O'Shea does well to stand up and win the ball from the advancing Wiltord
  • 26': Scholes picks up the loose ball and plays Van Nistelrooy in over the top. Cacapa does superbly against the Dutchman - and forced the foul
  • 27': Wiltord lays the ball off for Juninho, there's a chance to strike but he gets it all wrong - it sails well over
  • 28': Howard takes Wiltord's shot from 25-yards with ease - bread and butter
  • 29': Lyon play it around the defence, happy to wait for the moment to move forwards
  • 30': Wiltord is tugged back by O'Shea, free-kick to Lyon and a chance to launch it into the box
  • 31': Giggs does well to head clear from Juninho's delivery, then Frau slices a shot hopefully wide after Wiltord finds him on the edge of the box from the loose ball
  • 32': Govou crosses from the right but there's no-one in the box - O'Shea gets no help and slices the clearance behind for the corner
  • 33': It's swung into the near post from the right, Frau gets there before the defence and it looks a certain goal - until Scholes, on near the post, heads off the line
  • 34': Giggs loses possession to Govou and then drags him back, clear free-kick 25-yards out on the right. Juninho floats it in, it misses everyone but Howards fumbles the ball...
  • 35': GOAL!!!!
  • 35': A shocking error from Howard, a real howler, he couldn't keep hold of Juninho's cross and Cris had the simple task of tapping home. 1-0 Lyon
  • 36': Now Govou tries a shot from just outside the area, and it drops inches wide of the left-hand post
  • 37': Govou messes up the cross after getting to the by-line, a real waste
  • 38': United have given the ball away far too often in this game - and they were made to pay when Giggs dragged back Govou when he himself had squandered possession
  • 39': Djemba-Djemba again gives the ball away - he has hardly found a red shirt tonight - enabling another Lyon break
  • 40': Govou is tripped five yards outside the area by Djemba-Djemba. A real chance for Lyon. Juninho stands over it, his effort it poor and Lyon win a corner
  • 41': Juninho delivers from the left this time, but United clear their lines
  • 42': Juninho finds Wiltord in acres of space on the right flank. The former Arsenal man cuts inside and fires one across the face of goal - Frau just fails to connect
  • 43': Wiltord puts Govou through, Lyon well on top not, but Heinze gets back superbly to force Govou to stay wide, the angle becomes too tight and he fails to hit the target
  • 44': United are on the backfoot and in danger of sinking. O'Shea needlessly loses possession in the Lyon half and they break. Wiltord comes foward with pace and feeds Frau in on goal...
  • 44': GOAL!!!!!
  • 45': Frau curls home a fine left-footed effort with Howard helpless. It's no more than Lyon decide with United being cut open
  • 45': It's half time, and United need it desperately
  • 45': Lyon were probably good value for their opener, despite Howard providing a helping hand, and since then they have taken complete control
  • 45': United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is going to have to go into hair-dryer mode to get this sorted. And if Djemba-Djemba appears after the break it will be one almighty shock
  • 46': The second period is begun by Lyon
  • 47': Scholes drags back Govou, and we begin with a free-kick as in the first half
  • 48': Djemba-Djemba remains on the pitch to give the ball away a bit more... very strange
  • 49': Juninho is clattered by Djemba-Djemba, free-kick centrally in the United half
  • 50': It's a scrapped opening to the second period, very stop-start
  • 51': Essien heads clear from Keane's curling cross into the area
  • 52': Essien blocks the run of Giggs - free-kick, taken short
  • 53': Ronaldo shows the old step-over time and time again, and wins the corner
  • 54': Ronaldo takes himeself from the left, Juninho nods clear at the near post
  • 55': Ronaldo picks up on a deep cross from Keane and just keep it in play. The Portuguese looks up and picks out Van Nistelrooy at the far post...
  • 56': GOAL!!!!!
  • 57': Van Nistelrooy nods superbly past Coupet into the very corner of the net, breaking Denis Law's scoring record in the process
  • 58': It came from nowhere, but now United are back in the game and we should be in line for a grandstand finish. Great play from Ronaldo - he chased the loose ball and then found the Dutchman with a fine cross. 2-1
  • 59': Van Nistelooy sends Essien tumbling with an attempt tackle which finds... the tackle. Ouch!
  • 60': Van Nistelrooy and Cris are spoken to by the ref after a coming together, there's a lot at stake now
  • 61': Now the United fans can be heard in the Municipal De Gerland. Will they get more to cheer?
  • 61': Keane it up superbly waiting for support from Ronaldo. The winger comes in and takes the short pass, but his shot is deflected... into the path of Van Nistelrooy who's clean through...
  • 61': GOAL!!!!!
  • 62': After looking down and out United are level at 2-2 with a double in five minutes. Van Nistelrooy was just onside, and he was left with the simple task of helping the ball past Coupet after it ran into his path off a defender
  • 63': United will press forward now, a certain defeat has become a probable victory. There will be doubt in the minds of Lyon players after throwing away such a commanding position
  • 64': Cris gets a booking for a challenge from behind on Van Nistelrooy, a bit of afters following the earlier incident
  • 65': A change for Lyon, with goalscorer Pierre-Alain Frau being replaced by Honorato da Silva Nilmar - who's scored two goals in just 15 minutes of football for the French side
  • 66': United are playing with much more confidence now, keeping the ball and coming forward with purpose
  • 67': A mistake by Silvestre gifts the ball to Govou, and Brown had to be sharp to put it behind
  • 68': Juninho takes from the right, it comes to the unmarked Wiltord at the back, he checks inside and his shot beats Howard - but not Scholes on the line, who again comes to United's rescue
  • 69': Ronaldo is felled by Cris just outside the area, and chance to get it into the danger zone. Ronaldo curls it in to the near post but can only hit Juninho
  • 70': Lyon are coming back into it now, they appear to have recovered from that double Van Nistelrooy strike
  • 71': Juninho finds Wiltord on the right with a fine raking pass. The former Arsenal man looks to hang one into the centre - Howard punches clear
  • 72': Now Malouda breaks into the box on the left, and this time Howard opts to hold onto the cross
  • 73': Coupet comfortable holds onto Ronaldo's cross after he cut in from the left and shot with his right boot
  • 74': A second change for the home side as Hatem Ben Arfa replaces Sydney Govou
  • 75': Heinze finsd himself well forwad, dinks one into the box but only finds the head of Cacapa
  • 76': Corner to Lyon. Juninho floats it in from the left, a combination of O'Shea and Ronaldo clear
  • 77': It comes to Giggs who breaks with great speed, he spots the run of Ronaldo who finds acres of space just inside the box. He looks for Van Nistelrooty, but only finds Coupet
  • 78': Suddenly Lyon are on the break, Malouda's pace takes him into the box and finds Nilmar with an open goal... and he puts it wide of the post with Howard nowhere
  • 79': A change for United now, Ruud van Nistelrooy makes way for Alan Smith
  • 80': Lyon are pushing for a winner now. Nilmar latches onto a loose ball on the right of the box and plays a neat cut-back to Wiltord six-yards out - who blazes over. He had the time to take a touch and blew it
  • 81': United are looking very vulnerable again now, space really opening up at the back
  • 82': Sir Alex makes his second change, Phil Neville is introduced in place of John O'Shea
  • 83': Scholes looks for Giggs with a long ball over the top, but the Welshman is offside
  • 84': Keane looks for Neville down the line, there's too much on it and Coupet with take the goal-kick
  • 85': Both sides look happy with the draw now, very few adventurous attacks late in the game
  • 86': The atmosphere withint he stadium has died somewhat as well. Lyon fans amazed at the comeback, United supporters eager for the hard-earned draw
  • 87': Lyon make their final change, Sylvain Wiltord replaced by Jeremy Clement
  • 88': Reveillere holds by Ronaldo. He plays the free-kick short and United can't work the opening
  • 89': Two minutes to be added on
  • 90': Malouda goes down in the box under Neville's challenge, but he was looking for it - never a penalty
  • 90': Juninho finds too much space just outside the box and is allowed the shot - and United escape as he effort crashes off the outside of the post
  • 90': And there goes the full-time whistle
  • 90': United did superbly to come back and earn a 2-2 draw after looking dead and buried at half-time in the Municipal De Gerland
  • 90': This United side may not be able to defend, but they certainly have great character to come back from behind
  • 90': The draw puts them in pole position in the group, with two home games to come against Fenerbahce and Sparta Prague
