  • 0': A rapturous welcome for United as the teams emerge at Old Trafford. A rather new-look Reds line-up, but only one change for the UEFA Cup holders, who include Costinha in place of the injured Pedro Mendes
  • 0': Porto, 2-1 ahead from the first leg, kick off
  • 1': Scrappy opening as both Gary Neville and Carlos Alberto give the ball away... and a predictable greeting for Porto keeper Baia as he gets his first touch
  • 2': Phil Neville's cross from the right is just too high for Butt at the edge of the area. United build again but Giggs is offside
  • 3': Neville again launches long towards Giggs but the Welshman is outjumped by two defenders. United win a freekick on the left...
  • 4': Giggs looks far post for Fletcher but Paulo Ferreira is there first
  • 5': A busier start by the home side, as expected
  • 5': Phil Neville is in too strongly on Carlos Alberto out wide. Porto go long with their freekick from deep but Djemba-Djemba outmuscles Deco to win the ball
  • 6': United pressing very hard on their opponents, forcing Costa to concede a throw. Van Nistelrooy makes his first run into the box, tumbling under the Porto skipper's challenge. Nothing going other than a corner
  • 7': Giggs wins a second corner but keeper Baia is up to collect Fletcher's delivery from the left
  • 8': Carvalho clears under pressure from Van Nistelrooy after Giggs' flick-on
  • 9': Now the Dutchman does latch on to a Giggs header and his quick footednes wins a freekick from Ferreira, just to the left of the Porto box...
  • 10': Tapped to Scholes who hammers a low drive well wide of the near post
  • 13': Butt crashes in on Ferreira in midfield after Giggs loses out on a trademark zip down the left flank. Porto build from the freekick but fullback Nuno Valente miscontrols as he escapes down the Porto left. Goal kick
  • 14': That was the first hint of threat from the visitors.. Meanwhile Van Nistelrooy goes down under the high-booted challenge of Carvalho, who clears the resultant freekick from the edge of the Porto box
  • 15': So stil no clearcut chances forced by the Premiership champions as they bid to overturn that 2-1 deficit
  • 16': Phil Neville chops down Carlos Alberto. It's a yellow card and the home crowd aren't impressed. No question it was a foul though...
  • 17': Porto work the freekick around before Maniche overhits in search of Alenitchev on the far right.
  • 18': Brown is strong to beat McCarthy to the high ball, but Porto - enjoying more and more possession - press on. This time Alberto goes down very easily under Fletcher's challenge
  • 19': More possession for the visitors before Phil Neville cuts the ball back to Howard for the clearance
  • 20': First real burst from Giggs down the left but his low driven cross is out of van Nistelrooy's reach. Baia scoops it up
  • 21': Van Nistelrooy goes down under Costinha's late challenge, but play on as Giggs picks it up on the left. A driven cross from the byline which forces a corner. Ref Ivanov catches up with Costinha though and it's a yellow card
  • 22': Fletcher aims far post but Baia is up to collect again...
  • 23': Alberto wins another freekick to the chagrin of Old Trafford, but Costinha's howler of a backpass allows van Nistelrooy to hare towards goal. But the Dutchman's touch lets him down under pressure and Baia is out bravely to collect as his feet
  • 25': Increasingly hectic as United and their support look to up the tempo, but not much quality from the home team yet. Giggs fails to control Phil Neville's throw - goalkick
  • 28': First effort by McCarthy after good work by Deco. Howard gathers well though
  • 29': Costinha stoops to clear after O'Shea's run and cross from the left. Porto break and Alberto, star or villain of the first half depending on your viewpoint, wins another freekick on the left. McCarthy is then offside though
  • 30': 1-0 United!
  • 31': Giggs and O'Shea combine down the left before the Irishman cuts it back for Scholes to head past Baia from the near post
  • 32': Out of the blue, that was a real bit of quality passing and movement from the home side and a superb finish to match. 2-2 on aggregate and United have the upper hand for now
  • 33': More delight for the home support as Costa pulls him with what looks like a hamstring injury. Ref Ivanov ushers him off as United wait for their throw-in
  • 35': Mourinho ready to bring on a replacement but United, a man up, sense blood. Giggs cuts in to strike but Baia can gather comfortably
  • 36': And captain Costa cannot continue. On comes Emanuel
  • 37': Maniche fires high over after a brilliant Howard save from Carlos Alberto following Djemba-Djemba's horrible sliced clearance

  • 44': Gary Neville clears after good work from Porto down the right flank
  • 45': Dangerous ball from deep hit by Emanuel evades Borwn and Gary Neville in central defence but McCarthy is offside
  • 45': Porto fail to scaramble clear as Van Nistelrooy bears down. Scholes rams in the ricochet at point-blank range - but the flag is up
  • 45': A look at the replay and that was in no way offside... Porto go up the other end where Giggs has to block bravely from Deco
  • 45': And that's it for the half. A scrappy, niggly half of very little quality. But the quality moment there was has put the English champions in the driving seat. 1-0 at the break, 2-2 on aggregate with United holding the away goal advantage
  • 46': United have Saha on for the injured Djemba-Djemba as they restart
  • 47': Scholes drops back into a deeper midfield position but it's Porto who make the early running, Howard having to palm clear under pressure
  • 49': Now Carlos Alberto has a swipe at goal but fails to connent and Howard can watch it roll well wide
  • 50': Saha's first contribution is a high-footed challenge on Ferreira that brings a freekick

  • 53': Giggs hooks clear after Brown is first to meet Valente's cross from the left
  • 55': Van Nistelrooy is offside as Fletcher lofts the ball into the box after concerted United pressure down the right flank, featuring Saha and Phil Neville
  • 56': Butt does well to block Alenitchev's drive after McCarthy's lay-off at the edge of the United box. Porto gaining slightly in terms of possession and confidence
  • 57': Saha offside now as Fletcher aims long
  • 58': O'Shea is in to rob Deco out wide but he then is forced to concede a throw. United rather sitting back and chasing the ball for the moment
  • 59': Giggs looks for Van Nistelrooy but the flag is up again
  • 60': Scholes in too hard on Carvalho and it's a yellow card. He's out of United's next match
  • 61': A hint of studs-up and Scholes pays an all-too familiar price. Meanwhile Jankauskas replaces Alberto in an inexplicable Porto switch
  • 62': Meanwhile Ferreira has to head behind after Phil Neville's cross from the byline goes just beyond van Nistelrooy.
  • 63': Baia gets a hand to Giggs' delivery and Carvalho is there to hook the ball clear
  • 64': Emanuel drags Saha down and then does the same to Van Nistelrooy. Freekick wide on the left but Carvalho is the man to clear again from Giggs
  • 66': Van Nistelrooy and Saha go for the same header and Baia can pick up the loose ball
  • 67': Gary Neville clears after Jankauskas just fails to reach a dangerous looking cross from Valente, wide on the Porto left
  • 68': Van Nistelrooy's effort is blocked after Scholes and Giggs work the ball into the box following good work from Fletcher. United's best chance this half
  • 69': Porto break and Alenitchev is wasteful in driving over the bar from the edge of the box
  • 71': Brown nods the ball away from danger as McCarthy looks to seize on Jankauskas' flick-on
  • 72': Carvalho blocks Saha's long-range effort after Scholes feeds Butt. The French striker was eyeing the top corner then.
  • 73': Meanwhile, looks like Ronaldo is set to take the field
  • 74': Maniche catches Scholes late - studs up and that's a yellow card. Here comes Ronaldo, on for the tiring Fletcher. Not your stereotypical defensive substitution, but one that Old Trafford greets with considerable approval
  • 75': Ferreira intercepts Scholes' long, driven ball for van Nistelrooy
  • 77': Carvalho barges into the back of Saha. Freekick United, but Ronaldo loses out on the flank as Scholes spreads play
  • 78': Saha battling hard up front before van Nistelrooy is robbed by Emanuel. Long ball goes towards Jankauskas but Howard leaps to collect
  • 79': Ronaldo goes down in a heap as he attempts to round Valente. Referee unimpressed though and play continues until Porto roll it out of play with the new arrival on the floor
  • 80': On comes Fernandes for Alenitchev meanwhile
  • 81': Jankauskas fouls Brown in the box as Deco curls in a dangerous ball
  • 83': Ronaldo can't continue - seems to be a thigh problem - so on comes Solskjaer
  • 84': The Norwegian favourite is immediately called into action to clear away from McCarthy
  • 85': United doggedly clawing their way to an away-gaols win here... Five minutes plus stoppages
  • 86': McCarthy climbs all over O'Shea in the United box. Freekick. United break but Baia can gather Giggs' cross
  • 87': Now Gary Neville hoofs clear. Porto launching ball after ball towards Howard's penalty area but the United rearguard doing its job for now
  • 88': Giggs blocks Ferreira's cross from the right but Porto build again, only for Howard to claim
  • 89': Phil Neville furious with the referee as Jankauskas wins a freekick, backing into the defender. 25 yards out
  • 90': Howard parries McCarthy's effort and Costinha is there to ram the leveller into the net. 1-1!
  • 91': Catastrophic for United, now 3-2 down on aggregate
  • 92': Into the second of three added minutes. Valente has to scramble the ball off the line as Van Nistelrooy scuffs at goal
  • 92': Giggs' corner is headed clear. Porto all hands to the pump
  • 93': McCarthy is offside - he kicks the ball away and gets a yellow card for his trouble
  • 93': No help to United who lump it forward again. Solskjaer nods forward but Scholes can't latch onto it
  • 93': Van Nistelrooy tries to hold it up and turn for the shot but Ferreira hoofs away
  • 93': That's it. United crash out to that last-minute goal
  • 93': The Reds will be bemoaning their misfortune. The freekick decision was marginal - shades of Teddy Sheringham for England against Greece in 2001 - but the offside decision that denied Scholes a second was dreadful. That said - would any of this happened with Keane and, lest we forget, Ferdinand in the side?
