Drake led 27-9 early in the fourth quarter after Luke Bailey hit Mitchell January with a 36-yard touchdown pass.
San Diego then rallied with a touchdown, a field goal, a safety and another touchdown to lead 28-27. The go-ahead score was a 5-yard pass from Grant Sergent to Peyton Smith on a fourth-down play with about 6 minutes remaining but Sergent threw incomplete on a two-point conversion try.
The Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs on their next possession, then forced a punt and got the ball back at their own 7-yard line with 44 seconds left. Bailey's completions of 34 yards to January and 22 yards to Taj Hughes helped Drake reach USD's 31-yard line with 5 seconds remaining. Dunning then blasted the winning kick, his third field goal of the game.
Last year, Bailey threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Trey Radocha on the final play, lifting Drake to a 25-20 victory over the Toreros. In this one, they hooked up for a 3-yard score that gave Drake a 13-9 lead heading into halftime.
Bailey was 29-of-49 passing for 263 yards with two touchdowns for the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-0 Pioneer Football Conference). January had nine receptions for 121 yards.
Sergent completed 25 of 40 passes for 292 yards. He had two TD passes and was intercepted once. Cole Monarch had eight catches for 122 yardsk for the Toreros (2-2, 0-1).
